QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Medicare Supplement plan?

It's insurance from a private company that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Medicare pays its share first, then your supplement pays much of what's left, such as deductibles, coinsurance and copays, depending on the plan you pick.

Can I keep my own doctor?

Yes. Medicare Supplement plans have no network. You can see any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare, with no referrals needed.

Does a Medicare Supplement plan cover dental?

No. Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans don't cover routine dental. You can add a separate dental plan. If you apply for Mutual of Omaha dental insurance together with a Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement, or within 30 days after, you can save 15% on your dental premium (not available in Alaska or Washington). A licensed agent can help you set it up.

Does it cover prescriptions?

No. Prescription drugs are covered by a separate Medicare Part D plan, which you can have alongside your supplement.

Can I lose my coverage?

No, as long as you pay your premium on time and the information on your application was true. Medicare Supplement plans are guaranteed renewable, so the company can't cancel you because of your health.

When is the best time to buy?

Your Medicare Supplement open enrollment period, which is the six months starting the month you're 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window, companies can't turn you down or charge you more because of your health.

Can I switch plans or companies?

Yes, you can apply to switch at any time of year. Outside your open enrollment period, the new company may ask health questions before accepting you. Some states give extra switching rights, and a licensed agent can tell you what applies where you live.

Can I get a discount?

Yes, in most states. Many companies, including Mutual of Omaha, offer a household discount if you've lived with a spouse or another adult for the past 12 months. Rules vary by company and state. Mutual of Omaha also takes 15% off its dental insurance when you apply for it with your Medicare Supplement or within 30 days after (not available in Alaska or Washington).
